Kreis Nuremberg July 15, 2023

The art group "Der KREIS e.V." presents the exhibition "Kharkiv School of Photography. 50 Years of Ukrainian Art Photography" in the premises of the former Sparkasse at Maximilianstraße 41 in Nuremberg, Germany. The exhibition features works of artists: Boris Mikhailov, Roman Pyatkovka, Victor Kochetov, Sergei Lebedinsky, Vladislav Krasnoshchok, Sergei Solonsky, as well as works by Sergey Melnitchenko and Artem Humilevskyi, among many others.

The artistic contemporary photographic style originated in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv and influenced three generations of photographers. The exhibition is based on the collection of the "Museum of the Kharkiv School of Photography (MOKSOP)" under the guidance of the renowned art collector  Sergei Lebedinsky. The museum exhibits were evacuated to Wolfsburg in 2022 at the beginning of the russian invasive war.

The works provide an insight into the aesthetics and development of three generations over the 50-year history of photography in Ukraine: from Soviet amateur photo clubs to contemporary art photography recognized worldwide.

In collaboration with photographer and freelance curator Ilya Zhekalov, the Nuremberg art group "Der KREIS e.V." has a unique opportunity to showcase parts of this comprehensive collection in the premises of the former Sparkasse. For KREIS, it is essential to present this collection right now in the twin city of Kharkiv, Nuremberg, as it not only reveals the life stories of many Ukrainians but also reflects a valuable part of Ukrainian cultural identity.

The accompanying program of the exhibition includes a wide range of panel discussions, workshops, open tours, lectures, and artist talks, including a conversation with Sergey Melnitchenko, which took place on July 15.

The exhibition will run until August 13.
